It was exciting for me to visit the village of Finkleton for a second time where there are secrets, magical happenings, perfect weather, and interesting characters. In Return To Finkleton, K. C. Hilton, the author, once again displays her exceptional talent by using her lively imagination, intriguing storyline, and realistic dialog to take readers on an unforgettable adventure. This is an author that readers need to watch; she possesses all the attributes of a writer who is bound for success.
All seems well with the Finkle family two years after they relocate to Finkleton where Mr. Finkle’s Uncle Harry had lived prior to his passing. He had left them a general store to run that included living quarters on the second floor. Unknown to William and Emma Finkle, their three children had uncovered a magical secret in the building that kept the weather perfect, causing the farmers’ crops to flourish. At that time, Robert was ten years old, his sister Elizabeth was fourteen, and Jack, the eldest, was sixteen.
Readers quickly learn that there are other mystical secrets revealed to the children—ones that would have a direct effect upon the Finkle family as well as others who lived in the small village. The children, with their inquisitive minds and adventurous spirits, find a secret door leading to an underground library where there are mysterious books with strange powers. There is also a magical clock that controls time, but they had agreed it would be best to leave it alone. As the story unfolds, the supernatural events will keep the eyes of readers glued to the written words with much anticipation.
Young Robert becomes the center of attention for a period of time during which he wrongly blames himself for a fire which affects his father’s health. He is transported into the future where, according to his outward appearance, he is an adult. But he isn’t really an adult and doesn’t like the changes that have taken place in Finkleton. He wants to go back in time and return to the place where he belongs as a ten-year-old; however a broken clock has to be fixed before this can happen, and he needs the help of his siblings. Robert wants to make things right in the past and in the future where he now finds himself.
Readers will meet some new characters in Return to Finkleton, see the beginnings of young love, and get a glimpse of the deceased Uncle Harry and his brother who visit the general store to comment on the changes that have taken place. He isn’t recognized at the time, but later on someone close to him acknowledges that it was indeed Uncle Harry and his brother. Where in time did this take place?
If you want to see snow in the summer and thousands of glowworms brightening the land every evening, I suggest you plan a trip to Finkleton in the near future. It is a pleasure to recommend this enchanting book to readers of all ages. After all, most of us are children at heart when it comes to magical happenings. Also, readers get a sneak peak at a third book—Saving Finkleton—which will be released in the near future.
